Keeping it natural for Tucker: Pet Naturals of Vermont & SimplyFido (Review & Giveaway)

The following statement comes as no surprise to people who know our family dynamics. We have two children. A two-legged one named Beckett. And, a four-legged one named Tucker. And, then there is the bun that is in the oven, too. Tucker was a serendipitous blessing that we found at the humane society and brought into our lives eleven years ago. He has a magical way about him that grabs a hold of your heart and doesn’t let go. People arm-wrestle for a chance to babysit him. The chickens cuddle with him like he’s one of the flock. The veterinarians “ooo” and “aah” over his personality. He was a doggie blood donor for nine years and wears a tag that says: “Inside this dog beats the heart of a hero.” Does it get any sweeter than that?

So, to keep this family blog just that, you’ll see things that are for each one of my children. And, this one is for the doggie fans out there.

SimplyFido: Organic Pet Toys

A toy is not a toy if it doesn’t have a squeaker. Forget bones. Forget rubber chewy kongs. Forget peanut butter stuffed barrels. Forget tennis balls. It’s ALL ABOUT THE SQUEAKER. The squeaker had better be hardy because Tucker will test its limits within the first minute. And, the toy design needs to have some cute redeemable quality that makes it tolerable to keep around the house, on the carpet, on his bed, next to our bed and even in the bathroom. The toys are squeaking everywhere.

The SimplyFido line of organic dog toys has gained a permanent place in the doggie toy bin. I appreciate the endearing designs and the durability of the toys, but what I like most are the materials that are used in the construction. All fabrics, adornments and fillings are organic. For every bit of organic cotton that is purchased, the decision is made to keep more chemicals and pesticides out of our eco-system considering that almost one-third of pesticides are put onto cotton crops. Each SimplyFido toy is colored with all-natural plant-based dyes and set with a soy-water wash to ensure the color lasts.

The Lolly Lamb that has been Tucker’s new BFF for the past few months is still squeaking strong and shows nothing but love bites in lieu of wear and tear. My Tucker puppy deserves the best and the best organic toys come from SimplyFido.

Pet Naturals of Vermont: Helping pets live healthier lives

Like most puppies, Tucker could take a perfectly landscaped, well-groomed yard and turn it into a ravaged pit of potholes and mud puddles. In a desperate effort to curb his enthusiastic forays in the garden while we were gone at work and college, we spent hours and hours at the off-leash dog park in town. One afternoon, when Tucker was six-months old, we brought him home from a day of running his wiggles out and he sacked out on the floor. When he came to, he couldn’t walk. Any weight that he put on his hind legs sent him into a fit of whining and painful cries and he slumped back to the floor. After a $250 visit to the vet and the entire rigmarole of tests, we were left with the following diagnosis: “Tucker has moderate to severe hip dysplasia in his right hind leg”. Our two options for treatment were: “Surgery to the heart-stopping tune of $1500” or “Supplements and limiting his physical activity.” These two broke college students picked option 2.

For eleven years, we have battled the hip dysplasia. We have learned to pull the plug on playtime when Tucker is still going strong, but is clearly pushing his limits. And, we have learned to rely on supplements to help his bad wheel. My new go-to source for his supplements is Pet Naturals of Vermont. Their Hip+Joint supplements are made with all-natural ingredients and their chewable formula makes them double as “treats”. The classic “hip” ingredients like chondroitin and glucosamine are present, but the formulation is such that the results are quick and noticeable. The price tag is affordable at around $16 for a bag of 45 chews.

Tucker is the perfect height for petting. At 85-pounds, his head is just at the height of your hand when you are standing and your arm is resting down by your side. This “perfect” height also makes for a one-on-one interaction with doggy breath when you are sitting on the couch or the floor. Even with regular teeth brushing (yes, we brush the dog’s teeth!) and very limited table scraps (these are chicken feed people!) – Tucker can still get breath that will peel paint or make your eyes water.

Treats that promise good dog breath abound, but there one key that is usually missing – the dog needs to CHEW the treats for them to work. Not swallow them whole. The Breath Bites from Pet Naturals of Vermont are just that. Bite size treats that are flavorful enough to keep them in the dog’s mouth for chewage and workage. And, they work. I mean they really work. The number one ingredient is spirulina and the algae-ruffage is key ridding the mouth of putrid-smells and bringing a smile to my face when Tucker wants to have one-on-one time.

Our little doggie is Reggie…I am sure his breath would rivel Tuckers…Little doggies tend to have really bad breath because their mouths are so little…
And he LOVES new toys…only dog I have had that loves presents..I bring him a new toy and he immediately plays with it 🙂

Wahoo…my big guy is a 90 lb. yellow lab named Cowboy, aka Mr. Lover Boy. He was also a shelter dog with a pretty rough childhood. He’s been my favorite boy (except for my four grandsons) for about 8 years. He has several squeaky toys–I even keep some in his travel bag for visiting. He would love to have a new squeaky (we call them his “babies”). He can’t go outside, greet someone at the door, or meet a new friend without first grabbing his most available baby. Thanks for the great tip!

Wow! We have a 4-yr old Golden who is Tucker’s relative…sounds like they even share genes. Chance, who was a burden to me as a puppy…ask me sometime and I’ll tell you the story–make no mistake I LOVE dogs more than humans…was diagnosed with hip dysplasia/arthritis this year. This guy is stoic in nature and knows no boundaries when it comes to chasing a tennis ball, running alongside a bike or his owners, or swimming. But, we went through the same situation. No more bikes. Ball play comes at 30 minute intervals with lots of rest in between, and 4 mile runs are now walks (off-leash if he’s lucky). Glucosamine has become a staple and I wince when I see him after our week vacation at the beach–he loves it and he’s family, and it’s a standing family tradition, but it’s heartbreaking when we get home. I’m going to try the treats. I can’t wait to see our big boy 83 pounds wriggle at the anticipation of a new treat.

These treats really have made a difference for Tucker. I also have a few other homeopathic remedies that I swear by and another all-natural pill that I have been giving him for about 10 years. Let me know if you’d like the info. Doggies are the best! Tucker says “hi” to your guy!
